Research Critique

After the 2 weeks of research we were put into pairs and each pair assessed each others research work and made comments and possible areas of improvements.

Sam graded me a merit which i was pleased with as this is my target grade. His reasons for this grade was that i had a substantial amount of research with supporting responses and potential ideas which he thought was really good.

He then made 4 suggestions:
1. To complete annotating all my research
2. Gather further research which i was intending on collecting over the following weekend which was to visit the Naked Deli and The Corner in Jesmond.
3.He also suggested that i tried looking into some more brand specific research such as more packaging designs.
4. Finally, he said that i could try gathering more stylised and higher end research from places such as Fenwicks as opposed to cheaper super market brands.

He also commented on how he felt my work was successful in terms on amount of content however, i still needed to carry out substantial further research to gather a better understanding of the theme of my project.

Planning for Final Show

unnamed

For the final show I will have an 8 x 4 foot board to myself to mount my final designs. For the show I will be printing and mounting my 4 bottle labels, possibly only 2 food packaging labels and 1 example of my bag designs as well as my poster which I will print either A3 or A2. I need to figure out a way of laying out all these things so that they sit comfortably on my board. I also want to ensure that the board isn’t cramped and that there is a lot of negative space so that it is easier to see my designs. I also want to ensure that I position my designs at roughly eye level so that it is the first think that the viewers see.

Week 6 and 7 Time Plans

Week 6 (Monday 8th– Friday 12th)

  • MONDAY
I plan to realise my designs and choose one to go with for all my proposed creations (labels and food packaging). For this I will need a computer with illustrator on it.
  • TUESDAY
I plan to print development and annotate in sketchbook, meaning I will need a printer and a sketchbook.
  • WEDNESDAY
I plan to put my chosen designs across 4 different flavoured smoothies.
  • THURSDAY
Continue Wednesdays task as well as beginning to create food packaging with the same designs.
  • FRIDAY/WEEKEND
Catch up on sketchbook, and think about other media designs and ideas.

This week went as planned in terms of what I wanted to complete, however everything was delayed slightly due to the struggle to reach a final design which I liked. However, once I reached this, I managed to complete what I suggested in the same week. However I have still not documented my developments into my sketchbook so unfortunately that is going to have to be a job for the following Monday morning.

Week 7 (Monday 15th– Friday 19th)

  • MONDAY
Print out developments and document in sketch book, as well as tweak and refine designs ready for completion. I also plan to finish my food packaging all together as well as beginning to create designs for my other media.
  • TUESDAY
I wish to spend Tuesday catching up on my blog as well as my sketchbook.
  • WEDNESDAY
Complete all digital designs as well as other media and print ready for hand in.
  • THURSDAY
HAND IN AT 9AM- must submit completed sketchbook and printed designs.

Week 4 and 5 Time Plans

Week 4 (Monday  24th April-Friday 28th)

  • MONDAY
I plan to finally do my mood boards for potential brand direction. For this I will need a computer with internet access, as well as photoshop and a printer.
  • TUESDAY
I plan to develop some of my existing logo designs to each brand direction from each mood board which I create. For this I will need the same as the above.
  • WEDNESDAY
    Continue with the above.
  • THURSDAY
Continue with the above and developing my logos further.
  • FRIDAY/WEEKEND
At this point I was to begin preparing for creating my actual label designs. Thinking about how my packaging will work digitally. For this I will need a pen and my sketchbook.

I was 100% on schedule this week and managed to complete all that was planned this week.

Week 5 (Monday 1st May-Friday 5th)

  • MONDAY
Begin creating some bottle label designs on the computer using photoshop.
  • TUESDAY
Development of designs on the computer.
  • WEDNESDAY
    Continue with development.
  • THURSDAY
    Continue with development.
  • FRIDAY/WEEKEND
Begin to realise designs to enter the realisation and refinement stage on Monday.

This week went as planned with development however something I had not planned for was the transition from photoshop to illustrator. Illustrator enabled me to create much neater designs therefore it was a much better software to use. Also unfortunately I was not able to reach the realisation stage over the weekend which was something that was worrying me as this could potentially set me off schedule. Also, I had to create some simplistic illustrations of fruit to use as part of my designs which wasn’t something which I planned however It was part of my development. Something which I did not plan nor have I done, is documenting my development into my sketchbook so this is something I will have to do next week.

Week 3 and Easter Time Plan

Week 3 (Monday 3rd April-Friday 7th)

  • MONDAY
Begin idea exploration by focussing on font and typography for potential loo designs for my brand name. I will need a computer, printer, fine liner and glue.
  • TUESDAY
Continue with above and respond to findings. Possibly carry out a questionnaire for brand name ideas. For this I will need the above list.
  • WEDNESDAY
Explore colour schemes and brand themes by creating some mood boards for potential brand directions. For this I will need a computer with internet access, photoshop and a printer.
  • THURSDAY
    Continue above.
  • FRIDAY/WEEKEND
Continue with logo name exploration as well as week 3 blog entry.

This week wasn’t quite as planned however I did still make progress. Monday was completed however this led to some ideas which weren’t quite planned. The typography I considered inspired me to look into bold mark making with the use of black and white paint and a large brush creating brush stroke effects. Although this wasn’t planned, It gave me huge inspiration for what my brand identity could potentially look like. I was not able to complete either a questionnaire or my mood boards however on reflection, I feel that those plans were a bit premature and they are something which I think I will consider at a later date. However I did manage to begin logo and name exploration.

Easter Holidays

  • WEEK 1
I wish to spend the first week of the holidays catching up on my sketchbook and ensuring that there are no gaps.
  • WEEK 2
I want to spend the second week of the holidays looking at logo and brand names and drafting up some thumbnail designs.

I managed to complete all of the above meaning that I could come back to college after the holidays feeling up to date.

Week 1 and 2 Research Time Plan

Week 1 (Monday 20th March-Friday 25th)

  • MONDAY
I will spend all day Monday walking around Newcastle gathering both primary and secondary research from shops and book stores. I will be using my phone camera to take photographs as well as a printer and a computer and money to print out my images. I will also be using the money to buy some packaging such as a smoothie or a snack.
  • TUESDAY
I will start collating my findings into my sketchbook. For this I will need a new sketchbook, glue and a fine liner.
  • WEDNESDAY
I will now annotate and begin responding visually to my research. I will need some pencils, a fine liner and my sketchbook.
  • THURSDAY
    Continue with annotation and responding.
  • FRIDAY/WEEKEND

I plan to finish my annotation on my findings to date as well as collect further research as I plan to visit ‘The Corner’ in Jesmond. I will also complete week 1 blog entry. For this I will need some money, camera and a computer.

During this week I managed to complete all that I planned. I even did a little more as over the weekend I also visited ‘ The Naked Deli’ and took lots of photographs. ‘The Corner’ was also a little disappointing as none of the products sold had their own branded packaging, however I still carried out some research and took inspiration from the logo design.

Week 2 (Monday 2th March-Friday 31st)

  • MONDAY
I plan to document the weekends research into my sketchbook including annotation. For this I will need to print my work and I will need some glue and some pens.
  • TUESDAY
I will spend Tuesday finishing Mondays work.
  • WEDNESDAY
I wish to spend Wednesday looking at juice bar brands and potentially going out into Newcastle. I will need some money and my camera again for this task.
  • THURSDAY
I will spend all morning preparing my sketchbook for the critique which is at 1pm.
  • FRIDAY/WEEKEND
I plan to spend the weekend carrying out secondary research utilising Pinterest and thedieline.com. i will also do my week 2 blog entry. I will need a computer with internet access and a printer.

I also managed to complete these tasks this week and I am also finding keeping a time plan useful as it is really proving to keep me on track. It is also making me relax a little as I feel very in control with what is happening. I was fully ready and prepared for the critique which I planned and it was very useful for me to gather other people’s opinions and feedback.
